When I built my house on St. John I purchased a solar hot water system from a local company, West Indies Solair. After 9 years of service it is still providing all the hot water we need for free!  And I qualified for a $1,000 rebate from the Virgin Islands government.  Going green has saved me a pile of green over the last 9 years.   http://westindiessolair.com/

Collecting rain water in a cistern, as is common here in the U.S. Virgin Islands and on other Caribbean islands as well, is another environmentally friendly practice.  And rain water is free!  The only expense involved is replacing sediment filters and running a U/V lamp so that the water is potable.  We do have to clean out the cistern periodically too.
