Many prospective buyers of Virgin Islands real estate inquire about the availability of reliable high speed internet access in their St. John home.  There are several suppliers here offering what we consider high-speed internet service.  However, according to an article in this week’s Virgin Islands Daily News:

Internet connections in the Virgin Islands are less than half the speed of the average U.S. mainland connections, according to data collected in the government’s $1.3 million broadband mapping project.

The V.I. Office of Economic Opportunity is applying for a $38.5 million to $48 million in federal stimulus grants to build broadband connections in the Virgin Islands, and the PFA voted Monday to approve borrowing up to $20 million to provide matching funds required for the grant.
