St. John Celebration 2026: A Week of Culture, Community & Carnival

For one unforgettable week, St. John came alive through music, color, tradition, and community. From Children’s Village and Carnival Village to J’ouvert, Parade Day, and the spectacular fireworks over Cruz Bay, Celebration once again reminded everyone why this annual tradition is one of the Caribbean’s most beloved festivals.

Residents welcomed home friends and family, visitors experienced Carnival for the very first time, and the streets of Cruz Bay became a celebration of Virgin Islands culture, history, and pride. Whether dancing behind the music trucks before sunrise, cheering on favorite troupes during the parade, or gathering along the waterfront as fireworks lit the night sky, every moment reflected the spirit that makes Love City so special.

Welcome to “Knightsville”

Each year, Carnival Village becomes the heart of St. John Celebration—a place where neighbors gather, music fills the air, local vendors serve island favorites, and unforgettable memories are made.

The 2026 Celebration officially began with the ceremonial opening of “Knightsville,” as Governor Albert Bryan Jr. and Lieutenant Governor Tregenza A. Roach, Esq., cut the traditional madras ribbon to welcome another year of festivities.

This year’s Village was named in honor of beloved St. John songstress Tishelle Knight, lead singer of the acclaimed Klimaxx Band, recognizing her lasting contributions to the island’s music, culture, and Celebration traditions. Throughout the week, Knightsville became the gathering place for live entertainment, local cuisine, and the vibrant community spirit that defines St. John Celebration.

 

The Heart of Celebration

One of the things that makes St. John Celebration so special is that it belongs to everyone.

For one week each summer, neighbors become parade spectators, musicians become storytellers, children become tomorrow’s tradition bearers, and visitors are welcomed into the celebration as though they’ve always belonged. It’s a time when generations gather, friendships are renewed, and the island comes together to celebrate its rich heritage and vibrant culture.

This year, Celebration held special meaning for Islandia | Christie’s International Real Estate as three of our own agents stepped into the parade as participants rather than spectators.

Keleigh Rees, Jennifer Merwin-Costanzo, and Paige Cope proudly joined Jewels of the Caribbean, becoming part of one of the day’s most vibrant and energetic troupes. Dancing alongside fellow troupe members in dazzling costumes, they celebrated not only Carnival but the culture, traditions, and community that make St. John such an extraordinary place to call home.

Celebration isn’t simply an event—it’s part of the identity of St. John, it’s being part of the traditions that make this island unlike anywhere else.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Parade Day: Where Culture Comes to Life

Every Celebration builds toward one unforgettable finale—Parade Day.

As the procession made its way through Cruz Bay, the streets filled with music, laughter, dancing, and an explosion of color. Vintage automobiles opened the parade before steel pan music echoed through town, setting the rhythm for an unforgettable morning of creativity and community pride.

Families lined the sidewalks while visitors joined locals in celebrating one of the most anticipated traditions on the island. Everywhere you looked, there was something to admire—from handcrafted costumes and intricate choreography to smiling faces enjoying the festivities together.

 

The Art of Carnival

One of the most anticipated parts of Parade Day is seeing each troupe unveil months of creativity, craftsmanship, and imagination.

Shaka Zulu Troupe
Bold animal prints, dramatic textures, and African-inspired designs celebrated strength, heritage, and tradition while creating one of the day’s most striking visual displays.

The Gypsies
Dating back to the 1950s, The Gypsies remain one of the most recognizable and beloved Carnival troupes in the Virgin Islands. Their fiery costumes and energetic performances continue a tradition that has delighted generations of Celebration attendees.

Elskoe & Associates
Known for elaborate costumes and theatrical presentations, Elskoe & Associates transformed the parade route into a moving work of art with towering emerald-green creations that captivated spectators from start to finish.

Bajo El Sol
Representing Bajo El Sol Gallery & Art Bar, owners David Knight and Priscilla Hintz joined the Gems of the Caribbean troupe in underwater-inspired costumes that celebrated the beauty of Caribbean marine life and the artistic spirit of St. John Celebration.

Jewels of the Caribbean
Combining dazzling choreography with beautifully detailed costumes, Jewels of the Caribbean once again became one of the parade’s standout performances.

The Soundtrack of Celebration

No Celebration would be complete without music.

Throughout the week, Carnival Village was filled with the sounds of soca, calypso, reggae, steel pan, and local performers who kept crowds dancing well into the evening. During the parade, the Love City Pan Dragons once again delighted spectators with lively steel pan performances that brought unmistakable Caribbean rhythms to the streets of Cruz Bay.

Whether listening from the Village stage, dancing behind the music trucks during J’ouvert, or simply hearing the sounds drift across the harbor, music remains at the heart of Celebration.

 

A Taste of Tradition

While the music fills the air and the parade draws the crowds, another Celebration tradition brings everyone together—the food.

Each evening, Carnival Village becomes a gathering place where locals and visitors line up for beloved island favorites, family recipes, and comfort food that’s been part of Celebration for generations.

One stop that’s become a tradition of its own is the Way Back When food stall. A longtime favorite in Carnival Village, it’s known for serving authentic Virgin Islands classics like fluffy johnnycakes, savory beef pâtés, and other island favorites that keep festival-goers coming back year after year.

During this year’s Celebration, KC Bisisu shared this behind-the-scenes moment while helping prepare for another busy evening at Way Back When, a reminder that Carnival isn’t just about the parade—it’s also about the people who volunteer their time, share family recipes, and keep cherished traditions alive.

 

More Than a Celebration

While the music and colorful costumes are what many visitors remember first, Celebration is rooted in something much deeper.

Each year, St. John Celebration honors Emancipation Day, commemorating the abolition of slavery in the former Danish West Indies and celebrating the resilience, culture, and heritage of the Virgin Islands.

That history lives on through the music, storytelling, traditions, and community that define Celebration today. Every parade, performance, and gathering helps preserve those traditions while introducing a new generation to the island’s remarkable cultural legacy.

A Spectacular Farewell

As the sun set over Cruz Bay on July 4, thousands gathered along the waterfront, hillsides, balconies, and beaches for one final tradition.

Moments later, fireworks illuminated the harbor, bringing another unforgettable Celebration to a close. Reflected across the Caribbean waters, the brilliant display served as the perfect ending to a week filled with joy, friendship, culture, and island pride.
