St. John’s waters are custom made for wind power. One of my missions since moving here has been to ask others how they landed on this beautiful island, 9 times out of 10 the replies have been, “sailed here and didn’t want to leave!”
Sailing is a big deal on the island but native, Mimi Roller, has taken it to the highest level. Mimi is part of Team USA, representing the U.S. Virgin Islands in laser radial sailing at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. The opening ceremonies are tonight.
Mimi is the daughter of Josephine and Hugo Roller who own the wonderful organic vegetable farm, Coral Bay Organic Gardens. Mimi could be seen regularly helping her mom on the farm in between her studies at St. Mary’s College in Maryland. Her sailing prowess began when she was part of KATS, the Kids And The Sea St. John, a non profit which promotes fun on the water through education.
