The Beach to Beach Power Swim: A Memorial Day Weekend Tradition on St. John
Every Memorial Day Weekend, something remarkable happens in the waters of Virgin Islands National Park.
Before the beaches fill for the holiday weekend, swimmers, kayakers, volunteers, families, and supporters gather along the North Shore of St. John for one of the most beloved annual traditions on the island: the 23rd Annual Joe Kessler’s Beach to Beach Power Swim.
What began as an open-water swim has grown into something much larger — a celebration of community, conservation, athleticism, and the deep connection people feel to the waters of St. John.
For many island residents and visitors alike, the event marks the unofficial start of summer.
And for years, Islandia | Christie’s International Real Estate has proudly been part of the tradition through sponsorship, participation, volunteering, and family involvement alongside the greater St. John community.

One of the Most Beautiful Open-Water Swims in the World
There are few sporting events anywhere that can rival the scenery of the Beach to Beach Power Swim.
Swimmers move through the crystal-clear waters of the North Shore, passing some of the most photographed beaches in the Caribbean — including Maho Bay, Cinnamon Bay, Hawksnest Bay, and Trunk Bay.
Participants choose from multiple distances, including:
- Maho to Cinnamon
- Maho to Trunk
- The 3.5-mile long course from Maho to Hawksnest
The event has earned international recognition over the years, regularly appearing on lists of the world’s best open-water swims. It is currently ranked:
- #23 on the World’s Top 100 Open Water Swims
- #7 on the World’s Top 100 Island Swims
But while the scenery is unforgettable, what makes this event truly special is the purpose behind it.
More Than a Swim
Joe Kessler’s Beach to Beach Power Swim raises funds that directly support:
- Youth swim programs
- Marine conservation
- Environmental education outreach
- Community initiatives connected to the protection of Virgin Islands National Park
It is one of the many examples of how the community of St. John comes together to protect the island while creating meaningful experiences for residents and visitors alike.
That balance between lifestyle, stewardship, and community connection is part of what makes St. John so unique.
A Community Event at Heart
Although registration for the 2026 swim is officially at capacity, the event is still very much powered by community involvement.
Volunteers play a huge role every year — both on land and in the water — helping with registration, timing, safety support, kayaks, boats, paddleboards, and event logistics.
For many families on St. John, participating has become a yearly tradition that spans generations.
Some swim.
Some volunteer.
Some cheer from the shoreline.
Some simply gather afterward to celebrate another successful year.
And that spirit of community involvement is part of why this event continues to mean so much to so many people.
The Lifestyle That Draws People Back Year After Year
Events like the Beach to Beach Power Swim offer a glimpse into the lifestyle that draws people back to St. John year after year — not just for vacation, but often for a deeper connection to the island itself.
It’s a place where outdoor living, conservation, wellness, and community are naturally woven into everyday life.
And for many who visit during events like this, that connection becomes the beginning of something lasting.
