Officer attacked by dog, shoots self

ST. CROIX – A police officer responding to an. emergency call Tuesday morning was attacked by a dog then suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his foot.Police spokeswoman – Melody Rames said that the officer was rushed to

Hospital where he received treatment for the wound and for injuries sustained by the dog attack some time after 9 a.m. Tuesday.
She said the officer and a partner were responding to a call and whenthey reached the- area of the inci-.dent a dog began to advance toward them. Rames said the offi­cer drew his weapon and the dog attacked.She said the officer discharged his gun to ward off the attack of the dog but shot himself.

     She did not know the location ofthe incident or the type of call offi­– cers were responding to, but she said the officer was treated and released from the hospital.Rames did not know if the dog had been shot or otherwise injured in the incident or if it had to be put down after the attack.The shooting was the second in less that a week in which an officer suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound.On Friday, another police officer suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his leg as he chased sus­pects thought to be involved in an arson and burglary reported in the Catherine’s Rest area.
