Dubai towerCruz Bay

Dubai opened the world’s tallest skyscraper yesterday with much fanfare.  It rises 2,717 feet from the desert, almost twice the height of the Empire State Building in New York City.  It is quite the architectural and engineering feat, no doubt.   As you can see in the top photo, you can’t miss it – even from the moon!

Here on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands, our tallest buildings are limited to three stories.  It just wouldn’t look right to have skyscrapers protruding up from our little island.  Not to take anything away from Dubai’s achievement but I prefer the low profile of St. John any day.  We have other attributes.  For instance, it is 84 degrees and sunny today.  For that matter, it is 84 degrees and sunny almost every day!   So, nice tower, Dubia, but I can’t help notice that for such a tall building it doesn’t seem to provide much shade.
