The tree is named after Phillipe de Longviliers de Poincy, who served as Lieutenant Governor of the Isles of America and Captain general of the French at St Kitts. He specifically imported the flamboyant plant from Madagascar for his garden, and is credited with introducing the beautiful plant to the Americas. It was thus re-named Royal Poinciana in his honor.
The Royal Poinciana has been described as the most colorful tree in the world. The tree’s vivid red/vermilion/orange/yellow flowers and bright green foliage make it an exceptionally striking sight. The Royal Poinciana is native to Madagascar, where it is found in the West Malagasy forest. In the wild it is endangered, but it is widely cultivated elsewhere. In addition to its ornamental value, it is also a useful shade tree in tropical conditions, because it usually grows to a modest height but spreads widely, and its dense foliage provides full shade. In areas with a marked dry season, it sheds its leaves during the drought, but in other areas it is virtually evergreen.
Know locally in the Virgin Islands as the Flamboyant Tree, in other areas it is called the Flame Tree, Peacock Tree and Flame of the Forest. We have just seen rain after a prolonged four month drought, and the flamboyants have shed their leaves and are in various stages of bloom. Vivid colors of yellow, orange and red dot the hillsides.

Starbucks, eat your heart out….
My husband and I have always sought out the perfect cup of espresso or cappuccino with just the right amount of crema floating atop the cup of fresh hot brew. Several years ago I was tasked with selecting the machine that would provide the requisite 18 bars of pressure. I selected an “all-in-one” that grinds, packs and brews. All you do after steaming the milk is push a button and presto, perfect coffee. Alas, the major problem with the machine is the noise. I mean REALLY loud noise; shrill grinding, double thump packing of the grinds and loud pumping of the water through the grind holder.
My husband hated it from day one, so the minute it needed maintenance work, he replaced it with the quietest burr grinder he could find and a manual machine.
My beauty sat in a box in the closet for years as we tried on numerous occassions, to pawn it off on others. I finally got my associate Amy to take the thing, after placing it in her car one day. When the time came for her to move though, she told me she couldn’t take it with her. That is when we decided to set it up here in the office. Amy was ecstatic and rushed to purchase Biscotti, sugar and milk.
Today, we christened the machine and had that afternoon pick me up. I look forward to offering our customers and clients the perfect cup of joe.

Tutu Bay in Tabor & Harmony on St. Thomas
Looking for a home under $800,000 in the Virgin Islands? Just look across Pillsbury Sound to St. Thomas. St. Thomas has over 60 properties for sale that are under $800,000. These are homes with great views and a variety of amenities. A lot of St. John visitors tend to see very little of St. Thomas other than the airport, downtown Charlotte Amalie and Red Hook - all very busy places. But there are many quiet off-the-beaten path areas that are pristine and beautiful. For instance, the North Shore has incredible views of the Caribbean, the Brass Islands, Hans Lolick and the BVI. Recently, I found a home for a buyer that has 175 feet of waterfront and a path to the beach (Tutu Bay pictured above) for under $650,000 in Estate Tabor and Harmony. Right now there is a home for sale in that same neighborhood for $699,000. The link below has a sample of some of the properties currently available.

On a recent weekend, my husband and I took a trip to Jost Van Dyke to meet some friends visiting from the states. Along the way from St. John to Jost, we met Steve. The next morning, after a few Bloody Mary’s at Ivan’s, Steve began telling us about “hooping”. Hooping, I learned, is a form of hula hooping but is typically done with a larger & heavier custom made hoop. It is great exercise and if you are lucky, you may get abs like Steve! A few drinks later and we wanted to see hooping in action! I wish we had video because it is impossible to capture the motion of hooping in a still photo. Gone is simply rotating the hoop around your waist and hips. An experienced hooper can move the hoop up and down their body without missing a beat! Hoop Daddy had everyone getting into the action. Shouts were coming from the boaters “Hoop, Hoop, Hoop”! Passersby were stopping to try it out. Others, like myself, were enthusiastic spectators.
The word quickly spread and soon Ivan himself was asking about the hoop and Hoop Daddy! It seems he has started a whole new craze on the tiny island of Jost Van Dyke. Steve has generously left his hoop behind with the “shell gal” at Ivan’s for others to enjoy. The next time you are there, stop in and try it yourself.

Last week we had a break in the weather; the skies cleared, wind died and seas became glassy calm. My husband Bob took the opportunity to sneak off on an afternoon dive.
As I pulled up in the driveway after work, he presented me with this trophy lobster. We’ll enjoy a few tasty meals thanks to his hunting skills!
Life in paradise is good,

We now have new photos of the views from this fairly new land listing at Creat Cruz Bay. This almost flat half acre lot is quite near the end of Maria Bluff in a well established neighborhood. The sunset views are terrific and it is open to the south east tradewind breezes. Great Cruz Bay is one of the 3 designated mooring areas on St. John so one could keep an eye on a boat moored there.

Reading all the recent news about record flooding in the midwest, heatwaves in the northeast and droughts in the south, it makes me glad I live on St. John. Enjoying views like this in eighty-two degree weather with sunshine almost all the time might seem boring, but that’s why we take vacations. It gives us time experience the extremes for short periods, then return to the routine.
Why not plan an escape of your own to this island paradise?

Collecting his crop!
You may have seen Merry’s post a while back about the large Mango tree across the street from the Islandia Building with lots of Mangos ripening! Well, they are being harvested by the owner - pictured on the roof. This beauty came with a $3.00 price tag but is sure to be delicious!

A property Tax amnesty is now in effect until September 2008 allowing anyone owing back taxes to pay up without penalties and interest. The Tax Assessor’s office this week sent out notices of back taxes owed on almost 47,000 parcels. Do not be alarmed if you receive a rather large bill claiming unpaid property taxes. I received not one, but two letters saying I owed taxes for 5 separate years as far back as 1992. This is totally incorrect. It seems many people are receiving these bills in error but we may be expected to search through old files for proof of payment. Contact the Tax Assessor’s office on
St. John at 340 776-6737 with questions.

A Seaborne Airlines plane being refueled before take-off in Old San Juan
A quick weekend getaway to Puerto Rico is a popular option; and a fun way to go is by Seaplane. Ever since watching Fantasy Island back in the 80’s, the seaplane seemed like an exciting way to travel! We have this as an option here and one company that offers this is Seaborne Airlines. Flights are available between St. Thomas, St. Croix, Puerto Rico, Tortola and Virgin Gorda. Traveling from St. Thomas to Puerto Rico takes about a 1/2 hour and you land right in the heart of the waterfront in Old San Juan. Taking off and landing in the water is definately a fun experience!

Ever feel like you need more “elbow” room in your neighborhood? “The Point At Privateer” on the very east end of St. John is the perfect spot for your new home. The owner has limited the lots to minimum one acre and many are well over one and a half acres. One five acre waterfront parcel encompasses all of East End Point. All lots have beautiful views up the Sir Francis Drake Channel to the British Virgins, are easy to build on and many are waterfront. For the sociable there may be a community pool and perhaps some rental cottages for owners awaiting construction or overflow guests.

There are a few great places that are relatively new that you may want to try on your next visit to St. John.
D’livo’s Italian Restaraunt: located near the Lime Inn in Cruz Bay, D’livo’s serves authentic Italian food that is fresh and delicious. Dinners range from $15-$30 approximately. Try the red wine! My understanding is it is sent from Italy and I did not see a label on the bottle.
Waterfront Bistro: on the water in Cruz Bay. This just recently opened and is excellent! I believe it is french inspired cuisine. Entree’s are in the $30-$40 range.
Mojo’s at Night: This is great if you are looking for something different and affordable. Located in Wharfside Village, “Mojo’s at Night” has a menu that is Asian/Indian inspired and they have excellent fried rice and dinners. Dinners are in the $12-$15 range.

This new listing in the Great Cruz Bay subdivision is relatively flat for an easy build and should get a good breeze as well as having great views north over the boats moored in Great Cruz Bay , west to St. Thomas and sunsets, and south to St. Croix. There are only 2 other lots available in this older, well established neighborhood and new ones do not often come on the market. The Great Cruz Bay subdivision has a waterfront lot owned by the Owner’s Association with a parking area and floating dock available for use by the property owners. Great Cruz Bay is one of the 3 designated mooring areas on St. John. Listed at $650,000

Roxy’s scarecrow custom took first place in the Best Costume Category
This Saturday was the 8th annual Wagapolooza dog show which is a fundraising event for the Animal Care Center (ACC) of St. John. This event exemplifies the spirit of St. John: it is a fun, unique, quirky & entertaining! The categories include: best tail wagger, best “puppy love”, best costume, best old timer, best lap dog, and a few more. This year there was also “best brother and sister english bull dogs in formal attire” as a category which, not surprisingly, only had one entrant (they did get the blue ribbon). Overall, this was a great event with all the proceeds going to the Animal Care Center on St. John. For more information about the ACC, please visit: http://www.stjohnanimalcarecenter.com/
